Pink Tank to go Guantanamo Orange

February 17, 2007

pinktk.jpgThis disarmingly pink tank, beautifully counter-intuitive for such a vile killing machine, was a hit as a float at the 2005 Mardi Gras parade.

The popular pink machine will make another important appearance in 2007,   sporting a new orange surface, symbolic of the quest to ‘Bring Home David Hicks’ mission from  Gitmo Gulag where he continues to languish in hell. Pink  paradise just couldn’t capture the atmosphere of this torture hell hole.

This tank was specially designed by Nick Peters and is 2m wide x 7.5m long.  It is part of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Trans-sexual, Queer network (LGBTQ), one of Amnesty International’s special interest networks.

The theme of the forthcoming 2007 Mardi Gras is ‘Defending Love’ revolving around victims of persecution in general, but particularly victims of persecution and torture due to sexuality.  Australia has some of the most archaic legislation and Toonen and Australia represented a victory for rights, when a homosexual successfully challenged the Tasmanian Criminal Code for criminalising sexual conduct between adult consenting males. The communication was brought under Article 28 of the optional protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts/undocs/html/vws488.htm. Various celebrities and pop stars such as April Lavigne and The Cure have been at the fore  of campaigns in inspiring a whole generation to stand up for human rights.
